Week 2ish

This post is a bit late. Week two has come and gone, but oh well. Let me just say, I expect to reach the 50,000 word goal the same way I did last year. In a futile attempt to beat Fin in getting there. Sometimes I wonder how normal people have fun.

Wordcount: I shall fill this in later. I'm keeping Fin in terror at the moment.

Favorite Place to Write: The coffee shop, still. Especially when I've got writer friends with me.

Most Productive Place to Write: That would still be my bedroom. On my bed. With earphones in my ears.

Favorite Snack: French fries from McDonald's. I know, I'm weird.

Week 1

Well, the first week of NaNo is over and I'm still breathing. One of my characters isn't, but I told him from the very beginning he wouldn't be lasting long. I hope he didn't mind. I would ask him, but... like I said, he's not speaking anymore.

I finally updated my Current Writing Projects page, so you can read the quick synopsis of my novel there.

So, how's it been going? Pretty good! I've got to say, I love working with these characters again. They're probably my favorite group of fictional people.

Word count: 17,003

Favorite Place to Write: The coffee shop

Most Productive Place to Write: My bedroom

Favorite Snack: Chocolate, either white, or dark, but not milk.

Music: Michael Buble (Lost),

Damian McGinty (Home),

and Josh Groban (Hidden Away).

I would make this longer, but I haven't reached my word goal for the day. I'm hoping for 18k before midnight.

Introducing The Way We Love

October. It's that crazy month where all the writers begin to realize NaNoWriMo is only four weeks away, and they better come up with some kind of plot if they want to make it to 50k. After being interviewed by an honest to goodness newspaper man on the subject, I was forced to decide what I would be writing this year. As a spur of the moment choice, my beloved characters of old won out.

I'll be torturing Grant, Luna, Ranen, and Weston for another year, at least. They'll be returning in The Way We Love, sequel to The Way We Think.

Since making that decision, I've been totally stoked about NaNo. I've even started outlining. Who cares if I've only got a few weeks and I'm just now on the first chapter.

So, who's doing NaNoWriMo? Keep checking back because Beautiful People will be geared towards NaNoers this month. Don't worry if you aren't planning on undertaking the craziness of the challenge, we'll have plenty of questions for you as well!

I'm the Girl...

"Great. Well done. Now we wait." -Mahoney

"No. We breath. We pulse. We regenerate. Our hearts beat. Our minds create. Our souls ingest. 37 seconds well used is a lifetime." -Mr. Magorium

I'm the girl...
  • who finishes the dreams she woke up in the middle of, on paper.
  • who eats Doritos and cheese for breakfast.
  • who watched the end of one movie and the beginning of another.
  • who started a new story when she's already swamped in a million others. (All for the love of inspiration)
  • who wanted a glue stick where no glue sticks were to be found.
  • who called "dude" and "Cheeto" American slang.
  • who sang Long Black Train at the top of her lungs with Josh Turner.
  • who was craving pork.
  • who had a good day.
  • who will have a great day tomorrow.

NaNoWriMo Has Come to an End

NaNoWriMo. It all comes to an end on December 1st. All those who succeeded, go to bed three hours early because they don't have 1,000 words to write before they can. Eat carrot sticks like they're candy because they're tired of living off chocolate and cheez-it's, and watch a movie. Just because they have the time.

Those who didn't happen to reach that coveted number of words fall into fits of tragic disappointment, wish they had never been born, then do everything the winner did. Just not with as much joy.

Thankfully, I happened to be in the first group. My final word count for this month was 54,455 words. I expect I'll make it to 60k before the end of the novel.

Some things I knew would happen and did?
  • A massive word war with my friend. A fight to the finish. A duel to the death. An epic battle that would go down in history.
  • My characters took things into their own hands and informed me they knew best. I listened.
  • I fell behind in my Spanish lessons. I'm still working on catching up.
  • I wrote about 49,000 words of trash. First drafts are always so much fun to read back over. Not.
  • I listened to more Celtic Thunder then I ever thought possible and now have every song memorized. Even the ones in Gaelic.
The things I didn't see coming?
  • I came to know my characters more then I had ever known any of my characters before. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I had been waiting to write their story for almost nine months, but I felt like they were living breathing people at times. Crazy.
  • I lost before mentioned word war by over 9,000 words. Oh well.
  • One of the sweetest characters alive... er... written, died. Rather tragically, but very touching.
  • I only fell behind the suggested word count for two days. They weren't even in a row.
  • A sequel slowly started developing in my brain, and if I can wait a whole year, will probably be my novel for NaNo next year.
  • This first draft turned out far better then last years.
  • I reached the 50,000 words before Thanksgiving. Eight days early to be exact.
All in all. It was blast. I'm relieved I don't have 1,667 words to write before going to bed, but I can't wait for next November when the whole thing starts again.

Meet the Cast

I'm not sure how many of my readers actually know what my NaNo novel is about. I'm not even sure how many readers I have. Anyway, I realized the other day that although I've posted excerpts and updated you on my progress, some of you, really have no idea who/what I'm talking about. This is a tragedy. A tragedy because the people characters I've slowly been getting to know this month are, to put it simply, amazing. Then again, I could just be biased. You make the call.

First of all, the plot in a nutshell. My novel is about five superheros who have to stop an evil child genius from sucking out all the powers of all the superheros in the five worlds. Yes, five.

Now, the people.

Grant Fallyn
The somewhat unwilling leader of the group. Twenty-five years old, with white hair. His super power is knowing what's false. So don't try lying to him. He lived with his Mom, Dad, and eight year old brother, Ian, before leaving for The Academy and would do almost anything for them. He also happens to be in love with Luna.

“I hope you know what your doing.” Luna whispered from behind him as the sound got nearer.

He glanced over his shoulder and grinned, “not a clue.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Weston Fallyn
Grant's older cousin, and the nerd of the gang. His superpower is hearing voices from the past that have to do with whatever he is doing/hearing. Probably the most misunderstood of the group, he is often laughing at things no one else finds funny. He is very much like an older brother kind of figure.

Like the girls, their room was almost at the end of the hallway. Room V-8. Weston laughed when he saw it.

“What’s so funny?” Grant asked.

“V-8.”

They all stared at him, not understanding the humor in the words.

“V-8.” He said again, as if just hearing the words would clear everything up for them. When they continued to stare he sighed, “it used to be a brand of tomato juice.”

Ranen Ken
The troublemaker and heart-breaker of the group. Ranen's power, simply put, is fire. He can conjure it up from almost anything, and its angry heat doesn't burn him. He grew up on the streets, and is still getting used to a more "protected" life. Rather selfish, and willing to do anything to save his own skin. Grant is one of the few people he will actually take advice well from.

Ranen stood in the middle of the Practice Hall. Breathing in and out heavily. It was almost the end of his half hour session and he had worked hard. Sweat glistened on his forehead, soaked his shirt, and covered his arms. The bubble wrap beneath his feet popped as he stepped forward, bringing his hands out in front of him. One last go before he left.

With a shout that would have made Ganghis Khan shiver he raised his hands above his head, palms up. Fire leapt from his hands. It collided with the sealing with a loud crash, spreading across the bubble wrap and crawling down the walls. It surrounded him in its heat, and breath taking power.

Luna Telmarin
Not one to sit back and let the boys do all the work, Luna is almost always up to her elbows trying to keep up with their pranks and games while still keeping a quality of feminine charm. Her superpower is invisibility. Until she went the Academy she lived with her Mom, Dad, and six siblings.

“I have no idea, but I have a feeling they’re harmless.” Grant said.

“I’ll laugh if you move and they bite your head off.” Luna replied.

“Yeah, I’d like you see you laugh while I’m being ripped to shreds by animals that will be turning on you next.”

“Okay, I might not laugh, but it would have been ironic. If those had been your last words.”

“Sometimes I can’t believe the things you find to amuse yourself.”

“It took years of practice.”

“And here I thought you had been born with the gift.”

Exie Shile
Sweet Exie as she is often described. She hates any kind of tension and hostility. Her power is to influence people's moods to that of her own. Unfortunately she occasionally suffers from drastic mood swings. The youngest of the group she is well looked after by the others.

“None of it makes sense!” She shouted, and that’s when he felt the terror. A fear unlike he any he had ever felt before, one he hoped he would never have to go through again. She was scared, more then scared. No words could describe the feelings she was going through, and unconsciously sharing with Weston.

“It makes no sense!” Exie repeated, “but we’re here anyway! In the dark, in this box. No way out!” She screamed.

ECG (Evil Child Genius)
The villain of the novel. An eight year old genius who fancies taking over all five worlds and turning them all into a place of fear and darkness. His own superpower was at one time to spread life from anything he touched, but as his heart began to turn evil, so did his power. He now spreads death and destruction.

Finally, he came to a small wooden door, the knob on it in the form of a large ring. No locks adorned it, with a simple pull he entered the room beyond. One small candle cast light on the small platform he stood on. In front of him, nothing. He wasn’t sure himself how far you would fall if you happened to be pushed over the edge, but he liked to imagine it was long enough to be fully terrified before meeting the bottom.

The Power of Bubble Wrap

The thing I love the most about NaNoWriMo is everything random that goes along with it. The strange choices you make when it's late at night and you just want to reach your word goal before you fall over dead. Strange choices like bubble wrap.

Another excerpt from my NaNo novel.

~~~
She moved with an easy glide towards the last door, the gang following rather awkwardly behind. “The Practice Hall has been finished with bubble wrap so anyone wanting to practice using their power without putting others in danger can put their name on the schedule and get half hour sections.”
“Woah, what?” Ranen held up hand.
“Bubble wrap. A sheet thin plastic injected with pockets of air, used to wrap valuables in to keep them unharmed.” Weston said.
They all looked at him in confusion and then back at Olivia. “What does that have to do with practicing your powers safely?” Grant asked.
She laughed, “I’m sorry. I should have explained. Studies have shown that as of yet, the only thing immune to any superpower, is bubble wrap.”
First Three Days
Day 1: My friend and I kicked off NaNo with an epic sleepover. Sadly, I forgot my computer cord at home so I was only able to write until my battery died, I was able to get word count in though! I sent a desprite plea to my Mother who brought me my cord before my friend and I left for a Celtic Thunder concert. (Totally off subject, but the concert was epic.)
Day 2: Still totally stoked about Celtic Thunder, I got my word count in while watching the DVD I bought at the concert... four times.
Day 3: What do you mean it's only day three? It seems like ages since I was struggling to keep my eyes open to get that first thousand words. I haven't gotten my word count in yet today, but I won't rest till I do. Of course, blaring music through my ear-buds, and chatting with my Sam helps move things along.
And now, because nobody asked for it, an excerpt from my at this point nameless novel.
~~~

“What’s going on?” Exie asked, just as confused as those around her.

“I’ve been trying to figure that out myself.”

They all whirled around in surprise at the voice behind them. The voice matched the person they knew it to be. Ranen Ken. His black hair was shaggy and uncombed, giving him a charming roguish look. A small grin spread Exie face.

“Wow, your alive.” Grant seemed surprised.

“Yes, actually.” Ranen spread his arms and grinned, “I am.”

Preparation is Nearing Completion

The insanity of NaNoWriMo is very close to bursting upon my life with all the craziness that goes on behind it. You know, that little thing called life, that, despite all the joking of forgetting it in November, must go on.

I had wanted a full outline to follow this year, but unless some miracle ensues that's not going to be the case. I managed to get up to chapter seven, which was actually further then I thought I would get, and has helped out more then I thought it would. It's very possible if I can get ahead of my word count I may just stop and continue my outline. Hopefully it will be worth the trouble.

I have loaded almost all of Celtic Thunder's songs onto my i-pod, not only in preparation of NaNoWriMo, but also the concert I shall be attending shortly.

Today my friend (a fellow WriMo) and I are going to bake cookies, rice crispy treats, and pie so we'll be able to feed ourselves while we write. I fully expect my best writing to emerge at four in the morning after eating a dozen cookies.

So, NaNoWriMo, once again I will say, I'm ready for you. At least, as ready as I'll ever be.

Hope

I've slowly been discovering that I love many different forms of writing. Short stories, articles, fantasy novels, historical fiction novels, now-a-days fiction novels, blog posts, and last year, much to my surprise, I added poems to the list.

I'm not very good, and it rarely happens, but every now and then a line pops into my head and a poem evolves around it. My poems document has been slowly growing though, so I figured I would share one with my readers.

If it's really terrible you're welcome to throw rotten veggies at me.

Hope

I cast around the darkness
For something to hold on to
I've heard about Your kindness
Hope

One word is whispered in my ear
A word that holds such promise
The enemy wishes me not to hear
Hope

When all seems lost
I still cling to one thing
No matter the cost
Hope

To all the living
There will always be
You are always forgiving
Hope

Eternally Your light will shine
Your love will continue forever
My heart, Your mercy will refine
Hope

Oh NaNoWriMo, When Shall Ye Arrive?

Dear NaNoWriMo,

I have been ready for you to come for months now. In fact, about a month after you left the last time, I was ready to start all over again.

My plot is pretty much developed to its fullest, and what hasn't we'll figure out together. We have before.

Inspiration has been here for awhile now. Junk Food is easily at hand. We are simply waiting for you before starting the party.

Yours Truly,
Georgie

The Genius of Mr. Disney

"Laughter is timeless.
Imagination has no age.
And dreams are forever."
- Walt Disney

I love this quote. So much, I added it to my e-mail signature so every time I send an e-mail someone reads it.

It's so perfect and it would take someone like Walt Disney to say it.

When the Dark of Night Closes In

What is it about the late night hours that make a young, female, want-to-be authoress' mind go wild?

Was it the hundreds of quotes about books and reading she had read the night before, or was it the book she had read before turning out the lights and crawling under the covers. After all, the Bible is the best book ever written. Surely it could have inspired something.

It couldn't have been the trip to the library earlier that day, or the hours spent reading the sequel to one of her favorite novels.

Why is it she must find the perfect wording for the end of her work in progress at that moment, when her eyelids are heavy, and all around her, her family is sleeping.

Then, just as the words click together. Just when everything falls into place, her dreams take over, and in the morning when the light comes on and the sound of the house screams morning in her ears. Why is it she has forgotten those magic words? Why is it they have run away from her mind, never to come home again.

Perhaps make their way into another novel, another teenage girls late night thoughts.

Gone forever… the perfect phrase that would have made her novel famous. The big one that got away.
